Fitiavana Association was funded on the 5th of May, 2012 in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Since more than 70% of the population lives below the poverty line, we decided to work together and raise awareness to the local and international population of the ongoing situation in Madagascar. The initial goal was to raise awareness and collect enough funds to organize events such as sports tournaments and Christmas parties to which more than 3,000 children participated. Fitiavana collaborated with re-education centers where we provided them with essential products such as medicine, soaps, blankets, mattresses, and food. It also organized soccer games with the boys center where individuals from the community volunteered to play with them to integrate the kids back to a community lifestyle. The association is also present in the slum areas of Antananarivo where it provides families with the essentials. Fitiavana puts a great emphasis on the importance of exchanging life values with children from both orphanages and hospitals through teaching and learning of songs and games in French and Malagasy. Lastly, its main goal is to bring happiness and a more unified community in a country like Madagascar that is so deeply culturally divided. Due to the rapid and deadly outbreak of the pneumonic plague in Madagascar in 2017, Fitiavana has decided to take prompt action in helping those affected by it. Though endemic to Madagascar, this year the outbreak has been spreading more rapidly than in the past. The pneumonic plague is the most fatal and contagious form due to its person-to-person transmission via cough droplets. If not treated in time, it can be lethal within 24hr. For this reason Fitiavana collaborating with local NGO’s such as “Ecole des Sourds et Muets” and Made4aWoman, as well as international ones like The World Health Organization. Together we are working on the prevention of the plague through disinfestation and education, in order to benefit of long-term effects.
